New Interventional Radiology Center Brings Advanced BPH Treatment to Montgomery County
Silver Spring, MD - 30/7/2025 - Chesapeake Urology, in collaboration with IR Centers, proudly announces the opening of a new Interventional Radiology (IR) Center in Silver Spring, Maryland. This state-of-the-art facility brings advanced, minimally invasive treatment options- including Prostatic Artery Embolization (PAE) - to patients in Montgomery County, expanding access to innovative urologic care in the region.
“We are really excited to increase our footprint in Maryland,” said Sandeep Bagla, MD, Interventional Radiologist and President of IR Centers. “This expansion continues our partnership with Chesapeake Urology and allows us to offer minimally invasive treatments such as prostatic artery embolization and other therapies to patients in Montgomery County.”
The new IR Center is designed to deliver exceptional care in an outpatient setting, improving access and outcomes while minimizing patient disruption. Josie Herron, MD, board-certified Interventional Radiologist at the IR Centers at Chesapeake Urology, explains:
“Interventional radiology in the urologic space provides minimally invasive treatments for a plethora of diseases using a non-surgical approach. Compared to traditional surgical methods, these techniques result in faster recovery, fewer side effects, and can be safely performed in sicker patient populations.”
One of the center’s signature treatments, Prostatic Artery Embolization (PAE), offers a non-surgical alternative for patients with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH).
“What I like about the PAE is that it’s minimally invasive, but most importantly, there’s no instrumentation of the genitourinary tract,” said Gary Friedlander, MD, Urologist at Chesapeake Urology. “There’s no catheterization or tubes in the urethra, which means significantly improved post-op care. Patients can return to their full activities relatively quickly, unlike traditional surgical resections which may require 4 to 6 weeks of recovery.”
Juan Litvak, MD, a Chesapeake Urology physician who has long served the Montgomery County community, is excited about what this expansion means for his patients:
“Now that our patients don’t have to travel to Baltimore for these procedures, it gives them the ability to access care without having to travel long distances. We’re very excited about opening the Silver Spring location and expanding into the Montgomery County region.”
The IR Center in Silver Spring represents a major milestone in Chesapeake Urology’s ongoing mission to deliver accessible, patient-centered care through collaboration and innovation.
